Epyx, Inc. was the notable computer game developer and publisher in the late 1970s and entire 1980s' game console and home computer arena. A company was founded under a title Automated Simulations by Jim Connelley and Jon Freeman.
History
Epyx (so Automated Simulations) was founded around 1978 as a vehicle for publishing Freeman & Connelley's number one game inside BASIC, Starfleet Orion for the Commodore PET. Their company quickly began getting games for more popular home computer ranges of a era, such as the Apple II family, the TRS-80 series, the Atari 400/800 and the Commodore 64.
Within Europe, the British home computer game company U.S. Gold published Epyx' games for the C64, and also ported many of the games to other major European platforms such as the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC range.
Among Epyx' better known titles come a Summer Games and Winter Games series (later as well including California Games and World Games), the Temple of Apshai games, Jumpman, Impossible Mission, and a "Computer Activity Toys" licenses of Hot Wheels, GI Joe and Barbie.
For a bestselling Commodore 64, Epyx manufactured the FastLoad cartridge which enabled a quintuple quickening of floppy disk drive accesses through Commodore's super slow "serial IEEE-488" interface. In addition, a FastLoad featured ready to hand papuan commands (for directory listings and program loads/saves, etc.), & the disk editor—a hacking tool allowing for straight online-subordinate access to floppy disks.
Epyx as well developed a handheld stake supervisor call instruction the Convenient. Unable to prove my point due to high costs, it was sold to Atari. Atari so renamed & resold it when a Lynx.
Inside 1987, Epyx faced an important infringement lawsuit from Data East USA regarding the Epyx's Commodre 64 game World Karate Championship . Information East thought a whole game, & particurarily a referee within it, browsed overmuch prefer its 1984 arcade game Karate Champ. Information East won a case & Ninth Circuit US District Court Judge William Ingram ordered Epyx to recall all copies of Globe Karate Championship from either store shelves. However Epyx appealed a pack to the US Federal Court, who reversed a judgement & ruled in favor Epyx, stating that any baby can easy produce retired the difference between them games.
Inside 1989, Epyx filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Based on data from Stephen Landrum, an extended-period programmer at Epyx, the company went smash because "it never really understood why it was so successful in the first place, and then decided to branch out in many directions, all of which turned out to be failures."
